Wet Poem in My Warm Pocket

No Gravatar
Shriveled in the top drawer
Disintegrating into
Rusty bobbie pins
And face powder
Bits of napkin from our little diner
Reminded me of the rain
That soaked the poem
I hid in my pocket
That morning when we ran
to catch the train
That would take us from here
To there
Where love lived in the air
Where we could breathe in
And roses and lilies
Filled our lungs
Clearing our thoughts
To unveil purity
Eleven lines written
Two stanzas memorized
Because I wanted to surprise you
Hoped to kiss you in rhymes
Hug you with my pregnant pauses
But the train ride was long
And time erased my mind’s menu
Stranded in moments
We lived in
Nothing mattered more than
those seconds
Five hours
Of uninterrupted focus
on the same colors
At the same time
As winter’s rainbow
Painted our view
When we finally arrived
We had made love,
a mad kind of love
Clothes on
Naked souls
Bare spirits
Poem smashed
and warm
in my pocket
Kind of love
I loved you.

Hide or Die

Hide or Die

His father wanted
the tough guy
ball player
dating the prettiest girls
who wore dresses
long hair
lip gloss
modest heels
high grades
homecoming dances
extravagant proms
lettermen jackets
He put on the act
wore the costumes
earned honors
until he decided to stop hiding
Hide or die
Hide or die
Hide or die
Eye to eye
Father to son
“Dad, I’m not who you think I am.
I can’t hide anymore.”
Eye to eye
Hide or die
Hide or die
“I know, son.
I was waiting for you
to be a real man
and stop hiding.
Be yourself.
I love you.”
Eye to eye
No more hiding.
Eyes never lie.

Golden Cookie Cravings

No Gravatar
Melting golden butter
sweet, light brown sugar.
Add vanilla and 3 eggs
slippery silky substance
devoured by the power
of 3 cups of flour.
A caramel glow
peeks through
with every stroke of my wrist
determined to capture
the essence of my cravings
cravings to be soothed
like a lullaby at midnight
but a cookie craving
is not about dessert
on a plate.
that you stayed
you ate.

She Will Shine

No Gravatar
Every glance
every smirk
she read
from his face.
Every insult
every chastisement
she bore
into her core.
He knew not the pain he birthed
in the angel child he claimed
he cherished.
She sought his approval
his attention
his unconditional love.
He spat advice
tainted by drunken sermons
while his own damaged child inside
cried behind feigned strength.
He never knew
how to give
how to live
how to grow
as a man.
But one day
she will shine
in spite of his shame
and his eyes will close
by force
while his heart opens
by chance
and his soul departs
by design.
