Pieces of Peace for our King on 4-4

No Gravatar

I had no idea that this Pieces of Poetry #4 would fall on the 4th day of the 4th month, the same date that we lost our peaceful leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on December 11, 1964 was part of his Nobel Peace Prize Lecture, “The Quest for Peace and Justice.” He said, “The richer we have become materially, the poorer we have become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers.”

Pieces of Peace for our King

We have learned to fly the air like birds

and swim the sea like fish

but we have not learned

the simple art

of living together as brothers.

We judge one another

while looking into eyes mirroring ourselves

We label to better define

that which needs no definition

We are divided

not only by those who seek division

but by our own selfish needs

to box beauty, brains, and beliefs.

All that we have accomplished

never matches achievements

in heart and spirit.

If our melanin still threatens

and our strengths weaken

we have attained nothing.

I pray for the day

when humanity’s moral and spiritual heart

beats louder than the drumming

of egos and property.

Pieces of Peace Poetry #3

Let me get this straight

We do not want pity

We do not need apologies

We do not care about how you wish you knew

We survived before you reacted

We had nightmares

We suffered post traumatic episodes

We compromised our sanity with instant replays

We held shame

We cried in therapy

And then

We decided to rise

Out of darkness

We decided to believe

In the power of forgiveness

We decided to reveal

Details of rape

Do not define

Who we are

We decided to pray

To set our minds on Spirit

To give us life again

To give us peace again

To live well again.

Pieces of Peace Poetry #2: Losing Mom

Second Piece

In seconds

it changed

we left

son called

hurry up

she’s dying

wait. no.

hurry up

mommie please

sitting up

letting go

lying back

angels came

took over

eyes closed

son kissed

we missed

ran in

too late

she’s gone

in peace.

Pieces of Peace Poetry: 30 Days of Peaceful Poetry in Honor of National Poetry Month

No Gravatar

In recognition of National Poetry Month and in response to the suggestions I received, I am writing 30 days of poetry related to peace. The suggestions I received were to write about being a survivor, write about excellence, write about the minds of children, and write about everything peaceful. How about including all those suggestions into pieces of peace poetry? I like that.

Pieces of Peace Poem #1

Be anxious for nothing

not tomorrow

not my finances

not the lines on my face

not the wrongs done

not how much longer

not how much shorter

not why me

why not me

because the peace

that surpasses all understanding

will guard my heart

and my mind

where peace and anxiety

never coexist
